Exciting plans underway for the Lubuto Model Library

Lubuto hosted a webinar on July 14th to tell the remarkable story of the April 11th fire at the Model Library's Reading Room and how we are Building Back Better than ever. The surprising story is that a grant was already in place to provide an entirely new book collection, computers and toys, renovate the existing buildings and construct new ones to serve babies and young children, teens and community groups. The grant, from the American Schools and Hospitals Abroad Initiative, allowed us to immediately begin rebuilding the burned Reading Room. ASHA let us adapt and learn from the causes of the fire by reprogramming the grant to support a new design and security features for the rebuilt Model Library.

A dramatic outpouring of support from the community made evident the deep importance and impact of the library. It was perhaps never more appreciated than when it was no longer there.

The story is told by Jane Kinney Meyers, Library Manager Given Besa, architect Eleni Coromvli and ASHA's Lauren Chitty, introduced by Lubuto Board member Pamela Tripp-Melby. Click here for details of the shocking event with a silver lining.

Next up: a Model Rural Library

The Model Library is not the only Lubuto Library that will soon be better than ever. The US Embassy in Zambia has awarded Lubuto a grant that will strengthen staff and services at the Mumuni Nabukuyu Library. The "Public Diplomacy Small Grant" will allow us to exemplify the inclusive, gender-sensitive and responsive public library services of our urban Model Library in a very different, rural setting. We are thrilled to welcome Brenda Ngaba, Namumba Namakobo and Nanchengwa Ntobolo--joining Mweemba Lwiindi on the staff in Nabukuyu--to the Lubuto team!

Volunteer of the Month

A brand new member of our Board of Directors, Liz McLean has already contributed so much to Lubuto. She was the driving force behind the July 14th webinar, capably leading its planning and production. The event truly would not have been possible without Liz at the helm. Liz is a self-described "connector, collaborator, and appreciative conversation enabler" -- the principal and chief knowledge and information strategist at Knowsaic. Liz is the very deserving August Volunteer of the Month and we are so excited to have her in our corner!
