The Girls Can Code! program at Lubuto Libraries will open up life-changing opportunities for Zambian girls. We are very excited to introduce new career paths for girls who have so much potential but have been greatly underserved." Hadassah Kasukumya, Director of Operations, Lubuto Library Partners
Lubuto Library Partners was awarded Motorola Solutions Foundation grants in 2019 and 2021 to establish coding workshops for girls in Lusaka. The 2019 grant funded the development of a curriculum for a Girls Can Code! program for Lubuto Libraries and provided staff training to implement the program. Two staff members are fully ready to run the youth workshops once it is safe to do so.
The 2021 grant supports the development of STEM skills among marginalized girls by running four 13-week workshops using the Girls Can Code! curriculum for 96 girls between the ages of 11 and 20 in Lusaka. The workshops--which Lubuto began conducting in January--teach programming, computer logic, circuitry, electronics, robotics and physical programming, and computer systems and architecture. This not only provides girls with new skills but will exposes them to female role models in STEM fields. The project prioritizes girls living in poverty from under-resourced communities and schools.
Enesto and Mwaba led workshops for groups 24 girls at the Lubuto Model and Mthunzi Libraries. Two cohorts have already graduated from programs at each of the two libraries. These girls particularly enjoyed building piper and Raspberry Pi computers and "bringing them to life” and were proud to receive certificates. Many expressed excitement to share their newfound knowledge with their friends.
