Here's Lubuto's take on "reading culture"
|
In looking back at Elizabeth Giles’ 2014 essay on the concept of a "reading culture," this term still causes confusion about why young people are not reading. Elizabeth wrote this essay while witnessing how eager children were to read when we opened the Mumuni Nabukuyu Library near Monze. We were delighted to learn that students at Saddle River Day School wanted to create a film as a school project that illustrates this essay’s important message. Although we could only provide still photos and one little bit of film, we think that they did a wonderful job with this 6-minute film and we think you will enjoy it too.
We hope the experience documented in this film puts to rest once and for all the myth that there is such a thing as a "reading culture" that is holding Zambians back. As Elizabeth concludes, “the answer is achingly simple."
