Lubuto Library Partners is a grassroots organization that has worked to show the important role that public libraries can play in addressing complex challenges, including gender inequality, HIV/AIDS, climate change, poverty, lack of opportunity and more. As we mark our 20th anniversary, we’re reflecting on the events, partners and opportunities that have made everything possible. Here are a few highlights from our interactive timeline:

"Kids Just Like You," a short documentary produced by Lubuto and narrated by Julian Bond, premieres in the U.S. and Zambia.

First Lubuto library opens (2007)

The Fountain of Hope Library opens in Lusaka to much excitement and fanfare. Zambia’s First Republican President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, was the Guest of Honor at the opening celebration.

Lubuto receives first ASHA grant (2014)

Lubuto receives its first USAID American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) grant to build a fourth library at the Mthunzi Centre in peri-urban Lusaka West.

Lubuto receives DREAMS Innovation Challenge grant to keep girls in school and AIDS-free (2016)

Under DREAMS, Lubuto develops innovative programming to empower high-risk girls to prevent HIV and stay in school. Lubuto's DREAMS includes scholarships, mentoring, and more.

Research on character development impact of LubutoMentoring begins (2020)

In partnership with Professor Anthony Ahrens and Dr. Millicent Curlee, Lubuto begins a three-year research project funded by Templeton World Charity Foundation, integrating character development with the Stepping Stones SRH curriculum.

The expanded Lubuto Model Library and Center for Training and Administration opens (2024)

On 2 May 2024 we celebrated the updated Model Library and new Center for Training and Administration. Funded by ASHA, the new space strengthens advocacy and training efforts.
